Magro
What is Magro?
Magro, which loosely translates to ‘to flourish and thrive’ in Cornish, is a small nurture style provision located within the Bretonside site. We provide a supportive and tailored learning environment for students who need additional emotional, social, or academic support. Magro is a supportive space designed for students who are struggling with issues such as anxiety, trauma, behavioural challenges, and learning difficulties. We aim to help our children build confidence and develop skills at their own pace before reintegrating them back into a mainstream classroom.
Intent
We aim to set children up with the skills to help them integrate into a mainstream classroom and prepare them to function appropriately in society. As a trauma informed school, we recognise that the children we teach often come to us having experienced adverse childhood traumas. We aim to help the children feel confident in being themselves and support them in managing when they are stuck. These soft skills are encouraged through celebrating successes to build their self-worth.
Children’s academic progress is supported through a wide and varied curriculum which also embodies real world experiences that they may not ordinarily have access to. Each pupil follows a personalised timetable with key teachers and specialist teachers for Maths, English, Science, Art, History and Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTC).
Implementation
Our approach to teaching the academic subjects is based upon children’s prior learning, time in school and SEND requirements. We assess prior knowledge and build upon what is already known whilst addressing misconceptions. We plan for individuals or small groups to set academic goals which can also meet EHCP objectives.
Reading is an important part of our curriculum to ensure that children leave school literate. We use Salford reading assessments and phonics as well as the Red Reading box to deliver reading interventions appropriate for each child.
Children access LOTC every week which offers an opportunity for the children to practice their soft skills with members of the public. Cookery is also part of the weekly timetable and includes developing skills for adulthood in budgeting, planning, hygiene and cooking.
Impact
The success of Magro will be measured in the achievements and growth of our students. We will see an increase in attendance, a development in confidence and academic growth. Where assessments, teacher judgments and records can be used to measure attendance and academic progress points, anecdotal evidence along with regular Motional profiling (a system that measures mental health and well-being) will evidence personal growth in the children.
